JEE Main 2027 Eligibility Requirements: Qualification, Age, and Number of Attempts

Candidates must satisfy all JEE Main 2027 eligibility criteria to take the exam. Failing to meet even a single minimum requirement will lead to disqualification and the cancellation of your candidature.

Qualifying Examination Year

To be eligible for JEE Main 2027, your Class 12 (or equivalent examination) passing year must fall within a 3-year window:

• Eligible Batches: Students appearing for their board exams in 2027, or those who successfully passed in 2026 or 2025.

• Ineligible Batches: Students who completed Class 12 in 2024 or earlier are not eligible to register for JEE Main 2027.

JEE Main Age Limit Rules

• No Age Restriction: The National Testing Agency does not impose any upper or lower age limits for JEE Main 2027.

• As long as a candidate fulfills the educational qualification and year-of-passing conditions, they are free to register.

Number of Allowed Attempts

• Candidates are allowed to take the exam across 3 consecutive years starting from the year they complete Class 12.

• Since JEE Main is conducted twice per year (Session 1 in January and Session 2 in April), an aspirant can take up to 6 attempts in total.

• Best Score Rule: If a candidate appears for both sessions in a given year, the higher NTA percentile score will be used to determine the final All India Rank (AIR).

JEE Main 2027 Eligibility Criteria & Qualifying Requirements

• B.E. / B.Tech: Physics and Mathematics (mandatory) plus any one of Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, or a Technical Vocational subject.

• B.Arch: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

• B.Plan: Mathematics.

Accepted Qualifying Examinations (10+2 Equivalent)

• 10+2 final exam from any recognized Central or State Board (e.g., CBSE, CISCE).

• 2-year Joint Services Wing course final exam of the National Defence Academy (NDA).

• NIOS Senior Secondary School Examination (minimum 5 subjects).

• Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) Vocational Examination.

• 3-year Diploma recognized by AICTE or a State Board of Technical Education.

• GCE Advanced (A) Level exam (London, Cambridge, Sri Lanka).

• Cambridge University High School Certificate or International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma from Geneva.

• Any Indian or foreign board exam recognized as equivalent to 10+2 by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

• Additional Requirement: Candidates from unlisted or foreign boards must submit an AIU equivalency certificate. If the Class 12 exam was private, a previous public board exam must have been cleared.

Class 12 Marks Criteria

• To appear for JEE Main: No minimum percentage required in Class 12.

• To secure admission (NITs, IIITs, CFTIs): Requires a minimum of 75% aggregate marks in Class 12 (or ranking in the top 20 percentile of your respective board), regardless of your JEE Main score.

JEE Main 2027 State of Eligibility Guidelines

• General Rule: The State Code of Eligibility is based solely on where you passed your Class 12 (or equivalent) exam, regardless of your native place or permanent residence.

• Improvement / Supplementary Exams: If you passed Class 12 in one state but took an improvement or supplementary exam in another, your eligibility state remains the state where you originally passed the qualifying exam.

• NIOS Candidates: For open schooling (NIOS), the State Code of Eligibility depends on the location of your study center.

• Nepal / Bhutan Qualification: Indian nationals completing Class 12 in Nepal or Bhutan must select their eligibility state based on the permanent address listed in their Indian passport.

• OCI / PIO Candidates:

  • If passing Class 12 in India: Treated at par with Indian nationals (eligible for Home State quota where the school is located).

  • If passing Class 12 from abroad: Eligible only for Other State or All India Quotas in NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs (not eligible for Home State quota).

1. Performance & Category Shortlist (Top 2,50,000 Candidates)

To qualify for JEE Advanced 2027, candidates must be among the top 2,50,000 overall rank holders in JEE Main (Paper 1: B.E./B.Tech). Shortlisting follows category-wise reservations:

• OPEN (Unreserved): 40.5% (~1,01,250 candidates)

• OBC-NCL: 27% (~67,500 candidates)

• SC: 15% (~37,500 candidates)

• GEN-EWS: 10% (~25,000 candidates)

• ST: 7.5% (~18,750 candidates)

• PwD: 5% horizontal reservation applied within each of the above categories.

2. Additional Key Requirements for JEE Advanced

Beyond the JEE Main rank cutoff, candidates must satisfy the following conditions:

• Number of Attempts: A candidate can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of two times in consecutive years.

• Class 12 Passing Year: Candidates must have appeared for their Class 12 (or equivalent) board exam for the first time in either 2026 or 2027.

• Age Limit: Candidates must meet the specified age cutoff (typically born on or after October 1, 2002, with a 5-year relaxation for SC, ST, and PwD candidates).

• Prior IIT Admission: Candidates must not have previously accepted a seat at any IIT via JoSAA counselling.

JEE Main 2027 Eligibility Criteria for Droppers

• No Age Restriction: There is no upper age limit to appear for JEE Main 2027.

• Class 12 Passing Year: Candidates must have passed (or be appearing for) their Class 12 board exam in 2025, 2026, or 2027.

• Maximum Attempts: Eligible for up to 3 consecutive years following Class 12 (allowing up to 6 total sessions, 2 per year).
